Industry Award for Best Animation at Raw Science Film Festival 2024
“We Flow into the World, and the World Flows into Us — The Beauty of Blood Flow” Wins!
The Awards Ceremony was held on October 5, 2024, in New York, USA.
The Raw Science Film Festival (RSFF) is an annual global event celebrating science, technology, entertainment, and media excellence. Supported by the National Academy of Sciences and the Science & Entertainment Exchange, RSFF seeks to humanize science and elevate expert storytelling.
A New Approach to Experiencing Medical Technology: Bridging Science, Art, and Storytelling
Based on real medical images and data and using methods, processes, and tools used to fulfil Fraunhofer MEVIS’s core mission, the scientists created exhibits and immersive works. These include 2D, stereoscopic 3D short films and large-scale hemispheric installations over the years. The aims are to make new technologies which treat serious illnesses, and the scientific processes behind them, accessible to a wider audience with a positive emotional connection.
One of these immersive sci-art works, “The Beauty of Blood Flow Analysis,” has been the starting point for the MEVIS researchers to cooperate as key scientific partner with leading London-based experiential artist collective Marshmallow Laser Feast (MLF), who produced as a result the works “The Tides Within Us” and “EVOLVER.” Creating innovative artworks designed to tickle senses and shift perceptions, MLF takes audiences on multisensory journeys to where imagination and information collide. They work together with specialists from a wide range of disciplines. Blurring the lines between art, immersive experiences, XR and film, their work is grounded in research and designed to carve out space to expose, explore and expand our relationship with the living world.
With the award-winning documentary “We Flow into the World, and the World Flows into Us — The Beauty of Blood Flow” the partners present a behind-the-scenes documentary on the audio-immersive and VR installations created through their shared fascination with the human body.
The artists explored the beauty and wonder of the human body from a unique perspective. Using medical blood flow reconstructions, a magnified digital model of the cardiovascular system and particle simulations, the human body was visualized in a new way; by tracing the path of oxygen through the body, the installations illustrate the human connection to the environment through every breath and heartbeat. Pushing the boundaries of media art and science, these thought-provoking works invite audiences to explore the spatial installations physically, rediscovering the human body as a landscape and marveling at the miracle of blood flow deep within the heart — unfolding regardless of gender, age, or race.
In medical technology, researchers are used to working in an interdisciplinary or multi-disciplinary way. The inclusion of artists, such as Marshmallow Laser Feast, opens up further, diverse possibilities for the exploration and presentation of scientific data and topics regarding digital medicine. Artists enrich the ways in which scientists — and ultimately the general public — can perceive and address phenomena related to the human body and the questions and challenges that arise from them.
The Raw Science Film Festival was established in 2014. It won “Best of the Fest” in 2019 by FestForums, a consortium of key industry leaders, event producers, and artists with a board including the Co-Founder of Woodstock, President of Live Nation, Director of Glastonbury Festival, President and Founder of Sundance Productions, and Editor at Large of Billboard.
Following presentations at Tribeca Festival and Cannes Immersive, “EVOLVER” will have its UK premiere from 24 October to 14 November 2024 at the University of Oxford as part of the ’Adventures in Consciousness Season’.
