On Thursday, May 6, 2021, the virtual kick-off meeting took place for the BMDeep project, which is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) for three years as part of the Computational Life Sciences initiative.

Bone marrow morphology is rich in information about hematopoiesis and thus the state of many neoplastic cancers. However, this information is currently underutilized because its analysis is manual, causing limitations in terms of reproducibility and the amount of information acquired. The goal of BMDeep is to automate the analysis of bone marrow aspirates using modern methods of image processing and machine learning. This will allow both established information to be better captured and previously unknown correlations to be discovered.

Partners of the BMDeep project, which is coordinated by Fraunhofer MEVIS, are the University Hospital Erlangen and the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg.
