Fraunhofer MEVIS is once again participating in Girls' Day on April 25 with an extensive program on the topic of “Digital Medicine”. The aim is to arouse the interest of around 20 participating schoolgirls from the 7th grade onwards in scientific content, to convey this in a practical way and to show them perspectives within the STEM subjects.
At the Bremen and Lübeck sites, researchers from Fraunhofer MEVIS will explain how medical images are created and how they find their way into the computer. Practical examples are used to explore how the human eye perceives colors and contrasts and how this can be influenced. The students learn interactively how images are displayed on the computer and how they can be analyzed with regard to certain diseases.
The program is rounded off with a visit to MEVIS’ own magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner. Here, images of various everyday objects are taken with the students and later examined on the computer. This imaging technology can also be explored on a small scale. Fraunhofer MEVIS has tabletop MRI scanners, on which the students will carry out their own experiments. Finally, some of the Fraunhofer MEVIS female researchers will talk about their careers and answer the students’ questions.
